Tampa PPMs Affected

On JANUARY 25th, NIELSEN’s cellular provider in the TAMPA radio market experienced a network outage that caused 43 PORTABLE PEOPLE METER (PPM) devices to stop reporting data. This required NIELSEN to replace the units. Affected panelists were sent new PPM devices and they are all back online. The company noted, “We received data from the rest of the panel without interruption.”

The issue was confined to the last day of JANUARY Week 3, and the beginning of JANUARY Week 4 in TAMPA. No other markets were affected.

NIELSEN wrote to subscribers, noting, “Our assessment has determined that there was no material effect on panel representation for JANUARY Week 3 as the single day impact reduced the average daily in-tab by approximately five people. While there were several days affected for Week 4, we expect that the total number of meters swapped will be small enough to have no material impact on panel representation and that we will deliver the data on schedule. However, NIELSEN is conducting an analysis to evaluate panel representation and assure that the data meets our quality standards for JANUARY Week 4 and the monthly report period. We will share the results of this analysis with clients prior to the delivery of the JANUARY Monthly data.”
