Gigs and shows to look forward to in 2018

Another year has begun and in Liverpool that means that wave after wave of gigs and shows are about to hit the city.

Lots of city venues have already revealed some of their headline acts and you can buy tickets for them now.

There is certainly lots to enjoy and get into and so to help you make some key show decisions, we have listed 100 shows and gigs for you and your crew to get booked up for.

So get your brand new diaries and make a date of it.

The ECHO Arena

1. Celebrating Sgt Pepper: Live

As Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band reaches 50 years, and Echo Arena also celebrates its 10th birthday, leading Beatle group, The Bootleg Beatles, along with the award-winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the unite to perform the entire length of the iconic album.

The show is back with visuals after a sell-out UK tour in summer 2017.

2. Vampires Rock – Ghost Train 2018

For more than twenty years, Steinman and his crew have wowed audiences with breath-taking performances.

Their routines have been laced with brilliant dances, energy, spectacular special effects and amazing music.

3. The Script

To coincide with their new album Freedom Child celebrations, The Script have announced their 2018 UK & Ireland Arena tour will come to Echo Arena Liverpool on February 12, 2018.

Freedom Child sees the band presenting a collection of urgent, timely, future-facing anthems that speak of both real-life events and real-time sonic adventurism. The album was recorded between London and Los Angeles and for the first time, the band chose to work with some outside writers and producers including Toby Gad and Nasri Atweh.

4. Cage Warriors 90

This event promises top action and a brilliant atmosphere for all fight fans.

The best fighting talent from the North West of England, and across Europe, will be put on show.

5. X Factor Live Tour 2018

Millions of music fans have enjoyed the X Factor Live Tour since it began 13 years ago.

For the first time ever the audience at the ECHO Arena will get to pick their own X Factor winner.

Becca Dudley, X Factor digital host, will accompany the contestants and present the tour’s competition.

The audience are the judges and they will pick the winner at the end of the show.

6. Flight of the Conchords

Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords are set to wow the ECHO Arena with their amazing show on April 1, 2018 with their Something Special show.

Their music and comedy became the basis of a BBC radio series and then a TV series in America.

The much-loved show was a one-of-a-kind comedy about two guys trying to make it as a musical group in New York.

Known for their guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy, the kiwi duo only have one fan in the Big Apple, although a massively loyal fan.

Their comedy and music became the basis of a BBC radio series and then an American television series that aired for two seasons on HBO.

They say of themselves that they are “almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand”.

7. Jethro Tull

Ian Anderson and the Tull band mark the golden anniversary of the formation of the successful Progressive Rock band.

Jethro Tull first appeared under the name at the start of February 1968 at the Marquee Club in London’s Wardour Street.

And they soon built up a following at the venue and at the countless small Blues clubs and pub venues across England.

The band came to the attention of the media and wider public recognition at the Sunbury Jazz and Blues Festival in the summer of ’68 and they were noted as the festival’s surprise hit.

Tull worked and recorded with the original lineup of Anderson, Cornick, Bunker and Abrahams and later on in ’68 they released their first album called This Was on the Island label.

Mick Abrahams departed and he was replaced by Martin Barre, and then more than 30 musicians would form the band’s core up until today.

8. Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment

This show will showcase four Disney stories.

Lightning McQueen, Mater and the crew of Disney and Pixar’s Cars will perform high-speed stunts across the ice.

The Little Mermaid’s enchanted undersea kingdom will explode into action.

And Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie and the Toy Story gang break free from the boisterous Sunnyside Daycare tots in an amazing escapade.

Sisters Anna and Elsa and friends Olaf and Kristoff from Disney’s Frozen, enter the wintry world of Arendelle and they are learn about love.

9. Michael McIntyre

McIntyre currently presents his own TV show Michael McIntyre’s Big Show on BBC1 and he has sold out arenas all over the world.

The last series averaged more than 6.5 million viewers and he recently nominated for two BAFTAs.

Youngsters that are under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

10. The Vamps

Coming off their biggest single ever ‘All Night’ with 300 million global streams and a number one UK album, The Vamps will continue to be center stage in 2018. Vampettes get ready!

The Vamps talented foursome came onto the scene four years ago and they have not stopped a minute.

The band had sold out London’s 20,000 capacity O2 four times in their first two years, and then they went on to complete numerous world tours visiting more than 25 countries.

Now, they are set to wow the Arena.

11. Tears For Fears

Tears For Fears are one of the most important bands to come from our shores.

The band – which consists of Roland Orzabal (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Curt Smith (vocals, bass, keyboards) have sold more than 30 million albums globally.

They have also won a multitude of awards and they have performed to numerous sold out audiences.

Their catalogue of classic albums include The Hurting (1983), Songs (1985) and Seeds of Love (1989) and they did a string of classic such as Everybody Wants To Rule The World, Shout, Mad World, Head Over Heels, Woman In Chains.

13. Harlem Globetrotters

Basketball fans will be over the moon to know that the Original Harlem Globetrotters are set to bring their action packed World Tour to the city.

The roster will thrill spectators of all ages with their basketball handling wizardry and artistry along with one-of-a-kind family entertainment.

The 4-point line will be positioned 30ft from the basket – which is six feet, three inches beyond the top of the NBA’s current three-point line.

14. Katy Perry

Perry, who was a headline act at the 2008 MTV Music Awards in Liverpool’s ECHO Arena, is set to perform at the same venue with her ‘Witness’ tour.

Her British and European ‘Witness’ tour comes to Liverpool on Thursday, June 21, 2018.

The Tour is her first run since the sold-out, 151-date Prismatic World Tour.

15. Roger Waters: Us and Them

The Us + Them tour production has been described as “eye-popping” and its set-list has been described “spectacular”.

It features songs from Pink Floyd’s greatest albums, The Dark Side of The Moon, The Wall, Animals and Wish You Were Here.

It also has new songs from “Is This the Life We Really Want?”

The title comes from the 1974 track “Us And Them,” from the The Dark Side of the Moon album.

Waters’s live performances are acclaimed for captivating sensory experiences that contain state-of-the-art audio visual production along with spectacular quad sound.

16. The City of Liverpool Tattoo

The inaugural City of Liverpool Tattoo takes place at Echo Arena Liverpool in September.

This new event will be hosted on the evenings of Friday, September 14 and Saturday 15 September – and there will be a matinee performance at 2.30pm on the Saturday.

There will be military bands, massed pipes and drums, local and overseas silver and pipe and flute bands.

The City of Liverpool Highland Dancers and The Imperial Corps Of Drums Liverpool will also perform, as well as the Lume De Biqueira Pipe Band from Spain, the Volunteer Band of the Dutch Engineer Regiment and the Artane Band from Dublin.

The world’s biggest and best Elvis tribute show is coming to Liverpool and it stars the superlative Shawn Klush and Dean Z.

18. STIHL TIMBERSPORTS World Championships

The Championships’ host city in 2018 is Liverpool and that means that top lumberjack athletes from across the world will complete in an excellent experience.

They will be taking on woodchopping challenges with axes and saws.

The national teams on October 19 will compete against each other in a knockout system.

Disciplines of Stock Saw, Standing Block Chop and others will be completed by four athletes in a relay.

19. Jeff Lynne’s ELO

ELO has had 26 UK Top 40 singles.

And Jeff said that he can’t wait to come to Liverpool in October, 2018, as he himself said: “Our audiences are amazing. It’s like they’re in the group. We can’t wait to play for them again.”

The show is renowned for its brilliance and it is able to combine pop, rock and classical music.

20. A Pacifist’s Guide to the War on Cancer

Kimmings is renowned for her perspective on taboo topics and in this performance she talks about cancer.

21. A Passage to India

The award-winning ensemble, simple8, will transport you to Imperial India.

And it poses the question of how can we love one another in a world divided by culture and belief?

It focuses on elephants and caves, courthouses and temples and legendary composer Kuljit Bhamra will perform original music played live on stage.

A Passage to India is one of the great novels of the Twentieth Century, full of humanity and humour.

22. The Jungle Book

This fun tale of family, belonging and identity will come to life in a brand new show.

It boasts excellent storytelling, new songs and captivating characters.

Mowgli, the man cub, tries to survive the jungle in this feel-good story about a boy raised by wolves.

It features live music and it’s adapted by the Olivier Award-winning Jessica Swale, Nell Gwynn.

It was created by Joe Stilgoe and it will be directed by Max Webster (The Lorax, The Old Vic).

23. Mark Thomas: Showtime from the Frontline

Comedian Mark Thomas sets out to run a comedy club and put on two nights in Jenin in the West Bank.

But he finds that it isn’t so simple to celebrate freedom of speech in a land where there is not much freedom.

Mark tells this story next to Faisal Abualheja and Alaa Shehada, who are both performers, actors and aspiring comics from the Jenin Club.

24. The Little Matchgirl (and Other Happier Tales)

The destitute heroine strikes her matches to keep warm, struggling to survive.

The matches will reveal a new story and a new vision, and the audience fall down the rabbit hole together.

It is inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen tale, The Little Match Girl, and it combines Andersen’s other tales, The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina, The Little Matchgirl.

26. Ruby Wax: Frazzled A Guide To Mindfulness A Forum For Discussion

Ruby Wax is set to show her new one-woman show on the stage.

It is based on Wax’s number one best seller, “A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled.”

Wax is honoured with the title of mental illness poster girl and she will give a tour of the mind, and specifically about how to use it and not lose it.

31. The Big I Am

Born as the bombs dropped in 1940, Peer Gynt is on a mission to live life his way and have a laugh while he doing it.

He is from the North and he goes to Vegas to Dubai, and his aim is to make his name.

32. THE BAND: Take That’s New Musical

All Take That fans must see this.

The play focuses on the lives of five 16 year old girls in 1992, and a quarter of a century on they set out to meet their heroes.

The ultimate tribute to two country music legends will take place at the Empire as The Queen and King of country music – Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers – are set to entertain country music fans.

On show will be Dolly’s personality and Kenny’s charisma.

35. Tango Moderno Overview

45. An Officer and a Gentleman The Musical

Let Love Lift You Up where you belong!

This is based on the Oscar-winning film with Richard Gere in.

This festival celebrates writing in all its forms.

It is a Liverpool-based community organisation that coordinates projects and events and it encourages creative writing, storytelling, non-fiction, literature, journalism, poetry and songwriting.

This is the country’s largest FREE celebration of African music and culture.

During the nine day festival, lots of attractions and performances will be run.

New works such as border discrimination, Trump’s Travel and the exploration of migration will all be looked at.

The schedule includes film, dance, theatre, music, literature, family fun, visual art and food.

There will also be FREE fun events such as music performances and a food trail on Lodge Lane.

The 2018 festival will be held between July 6 to July 15.
