It was any other Monday night show for the Song Suffragettes this week … except for their special guest. Randy Travis came to take in the #LetTheGirlsPlay concert on March 5 and got to see the women sing his hit “Forever and Ever, Amen.”
Kalie Shorr, Karla Davis, Makayla Lynn, Katelyn Clampett and Kaylin Roberson put their spin on the iconic track, stripping it down to acoustic guitar and letting the lyrics shine through their strong vocals. Shorr kicked off the impressive cover, charming her way through the first verse, with Lynn adding some power before all five singers united on the chorus.
The cover — see video above — showcases each of the women’s unique talents while collectively bringing a bit of soul to the heartfelt number, which of course earned them a standing ovation.
Song Suffragettes is a weekly show held at Nashville’s Listening Room Cafe where up-and-coming female songwriters perform in a writers round, trading off singing their own compositions that are typically packed with honest stories and raw emotion. Travis was in the audience that night with his wife Mary and publicist, as the crowd not only applauded the gifted artists, but also Travis and his presence. The “1982” singer has been making a considerable effort in connecting with young artists in the genre, surprising Kane Brown during a live performance and making Scotty McCreery‘s day by appearing at one of his shows.
Travis appears alongside fellow country greats Alan Jackson, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, John Prine, Marty Stuart, Chris Stapleton and Lyle Lovett, along with Americana icons Margo Price and Jason Isbell, in GQ‘s slick country profile in the spring 2018 edition of the magazine.
