It’s an exciting night on The Voice (Dec. 11). The top eight contestants paired up for duets as well as delivering individual solos. There will be a nasty and drastic cut this week, so this is the time for the singers to really show what makes them shine individually.
One of the night’s standouts was Team Blake Shelton‘s Keisha Renee, who decided to tackle “What Hurts the Most,” a extraordinarily well-written song that earned Rascal Flatts two Grammy nominations in 2006. The composition isn’t necessarily limited to country (pop artist Jo O’Meara recorded it in 2005), and Renee showed off an R&B twist on the tune which won raves from the audience and coaches alike.
The song wasn’t in the least country-sounding whatsoever as Renee delivered it, but Shelton gave it a rousing compliment: “I don’t know what else you could have done to get into that final four.” Coach Miley Cyrus also said it was a nicely original take on the tune. Overall, the version showed that the song is so flexibly written it can take on the talents of any genre of vocalist.
Check in tomorrow to see which of the eight hopefuls were eliminated. The Voice finale takes place next week, Tuesday Dec. 19.
