Sugarland may have been the biggest surprise of the 2017 CMA Awards. Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles took the stage to present the Vocal Duo of the Year Award and teased fans with an idea that they may be making a comeback.
No, they didn’t really break up, but they effectively separated so each could pursue solo ventures. In presenting the award Nettles listed all the years they won the honor before saying “and well, who knows?” with a mischievous smile. A peek at their official website and social media accounts shows significant developments. The above photo appears as the only post on their Instagram page. The same #StilltheSame hashtag serves as the splash page for their official website.
What is #StilltheSame? It could be a song, a new venture, a reminder of what they stand for or just stating the fact that their tomorrow will be “still the same” as their yesterday, meaning nothing has changed. The last seems unlikely. Neither Bush nor Nettles has enjoyed any level of solo success similar to what they achieved as a duo. They won numerous awards and notched five No. 1 singles between five studio albums. They were also a consistent touring draw for nearly a decade.
Sugarland went on hiatus in 2013, two years after a tragedy at the Indiana State Fair. Bush has insisted he’d like to return to the road with his longtime partner but Nettles has been less committed.
