Story Behind the Song: Luke Combs, ‘When It Rains It Pours’

Luke Combs followed up the success of his No. 1 debut single “Hurricane” with “When It Rains It Pours,” the second single from his freshman album, This One’s for You. The song, written by Combs along with Ray Fulcher and Jordan Walker, was originally intended to be much more dramatic — but when one of the writers decided he was more in the mood for something uptempo, the guys got to work on creating what became “When It Rains It Pours.”

Thankfully, the plan to turn the song into a positive one was a good idea. Below, Combs recalls the day he and his co-writers penned “When It Rains It Pours.”

I don’t know if there’s necessarily a personal side to it as much [as] it was a good story we wrote. I had the title in my phone; I keep titles in my phone. It was just one of those things where I came in and had the title, “When It Rains It Pours.”

I thought it was going to be a sad song. Jordan Walker was like, “Why don’t we make it a fun, not sad, thing?” So me and Jordan and Ray wrote it, and it turned out great.

We tried to have fun with it and write it in a ‘90s, early-Brad Paisley kind of song, is what we were going for with that thing. Luckily, in my opinion, we nailed it. People seem to love it so far.
