At least two country artists feel like Garth Brooks should have scrapped a planned CMA Awards appearance instead of lip-syncing his single “Ask Me How I Know,” but that would have meant that millions who tuned in to see the Hall of Famer would have been disappointed.
What should Brooks have done? Skip the show (or at least his performance), gut it out with a less-than-stellar voice or lip-sync his CMAs performance, as he chose to do?
Sound off in this poll:
The performance went down on Wednesday night (Nov. 8), and Brooks admitted what he had done almost immediately after winning the CMA for Entertainer of the Year. Twenty-four hours later, Anderson East chimed in, saying he was offended. Girlfriend Miranda Lambert backed him up.
“If you can’t sing then don’t. It’s better to be honest than to pretend. I think it’s bull s—t. My favorite performances in the show were live live. The truth,” she wrote in his comments section.
Brooks said he chose to lip-sync because his voice was less than 100 percent after 10 concerts in 12 days. He’s in the final month of his three-year-long North American tour and is actively promoting Part 1 of his anthology, a book and five CD package that reflects on his first five years in the business. On Tuesday, Brooks spent several hours doing interviews during CMA’s backstage radio event, speaking to Taste of Country and about two dozen other radio and media outlets.
Lambert also performed at the 2017 CMA Awards, singing “To Learn Her” live.
