The 2017 CMA Awards will take place on Nov. 8, but before the stars align at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena for the 51st annual event, The Boot wants to know who our readers think will go home with the awards in each of the show’s 12 categories. We’ve rounded up the details on all of the nominees, from Musician of the Year to Entertainer of the Year, and we want your input.
The Musician of the Year category nominees at the 2017 CMA Awards are five of country music’s most talented contributors, which is saying a lot.
Jerry Douglas is nominated in the category for the fourth consecutive year; in addition to being the name associated with the dobro, Douglas has earned eight IBMA Awards: five with the Earls of Leicester; one shared with Mike Auldridge and Rob Ickes, for the song “Three Bells;” and two for Dobro Player of the Year. Paul Franklin, meanwhile, returns to the list of Musician of the Year nominees for a second year; he has played with everyone from Alan Jackson to Megadeth and was named Steel Guitar Player of the Year by the Academy of Country Music in 2016 and 2014.
Reigning CMA Musician of the Year Dann Huff is back in the running in 2017, for his work across genres with artists that include Madonna, Michael Jackson and Keith Urban. But with 10 overall wins and eight consecutive Musician of the Year awards to his name, Mac McAnally is no stranger to this category either. While he didn’t get a nomination last year, he’s kept plenty busy, writing songs in addition to playing with Jimmy Buffett‘s backing band, the Coral Reefer Band, and releasing his own album in 2015.
Derek Wells is the final Musician of the Year nominee on the list in 2017; he returns for the second year in a row. Wells has played on albums for artists such as Chris Janson, Blake Shelton, Jana Kramer, Thomas Rhett, Brett Eldredge, Maddie & Tae, Ashley Monroe and Darius Rucker, to name a few.
