In a category that showcases some of the finest talent in Americana and its related genres, contention for the Best Americana Album Grammys trophy is fierce in 2018. Last year, William Bell won the award, for This Is Where I Live; this year, the lineup is a well-rounded batch of established names, with a solid up-and-comer in the ranks, too.
Southern Blood was released in September of 2017, only a few months after Gregg Allman died in May of that year. The album was recorded at the iconic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala., and features cameos from Jackson Browne and a number of legendary local session musicians. Allman was hard at work on the record in the weeks before his death.
Shine on Rainy Day is Brent Cobb‘s first major-label full-length album, and was produced by none other than Cobb’s cousin, Dave Cobb, the award-winning producer who has worked with Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell (a fellow nominee in this category), among others. Iron & Wine (aka, Sam Beam), meanwhile, released Beast Epic in August of 2017, after returning to the label at which he began his studio career, Sub Pop Records; the result is a refreshing recap of his trademark sound.
The Nashville Sound has won Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit sweeping acclaim throughout the music industry, including a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2017 CMA Awards; it is no surprise to see the album in this lineup. It’s also not shocking to see the Mavericks back in this category with Brand New Day, their first studio album to be released on their own label, Mono Mundo Recordings; their album Mono won the Best Americana Album trophy in 2016.
