In 2017, Vince Gill took home Grammy Awards‘ Best American Roots Song trophy, for his group the Time Jumpers‘ “Kid Sister.” This year, the lineup of nominated songs includes a track by late, great Gregg Allman, as well as four other worthy contenders; the trophy goes to each song’s writer.
“Cumberland Gap,” is a tune by David Rawlings that appears on his 2017 album Poor David’s Almanac, released in July; with flavors of Neil Young and Appalachian roots, the song is a good example of Rawlings’ versatility as a songwriter. “I Wish You Well” by the Mavericks, meanwhile, is a slow and sad waltz with a little of the southwestern flavor the band is known for.
“If We Were Vampires” was released on Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s 2017 album The Nashville Sound; the haunting tune captures Isbell’s melancholic and introspective songwriting beautifully. “It Ain’t Over Yet,” by Rodney Crowell and featuring Rosanne Cash and John Paul White, is a mellow and catchy acoustic tune about the later years of life.
This category’s final nominee, “My Only True Friend,” is Allman’s final original song. It tells the story Allman’s last years on the road before his passing in 2017.
