Miranda Lambert seemed on the verge of tears as she thanked her colleagues and fans after winning Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2017 CMA Awards on Wednesday night (Nov. 8) in Nashville.
Lambert took the stage just moments after Keith Urban debuted a powerful new female empowerment song titled “Female,” and prior to that, Carrie Underwood stunned the thunderstruck crowd by singing “Softly and Tenderly” in tribute to the victims of the mass shooting in Las Vegas on Oct. 1. Unity and harmony were running themes throughout the evening, which Lambert made reference to as she accepted the award for the seventh time.
“Carrie, you just destroyed me,” she said as she took the stage. “I just wanna say that, more than any other year that I’ve been part of the CMAs, I feel truly like there’s a family in this room tonight. I feel like we’re bonded together and banded together more than we ever have been, and I feel like country music is winning right now.”
Lambert beat Underwood, Reba McEntire, Maren Morris and Kelsea Ballerni for the award, which she won on the strength of her vocal work on her critically acclaimed double album The Weight of These Wings. She was one of the most-nominated artists at the 2017 CMA Awards.
