On Feb. 6, Maddie & Tae appeared onstage at the Ryman Auditorium for their debut performance since the duo officially announced that they would be joining the Universal Music Group Nashville family. This year, the duo plans to release new music for the first time since 2016. During that time, Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye, the musicians that make up Maddie & Tae, went through a tumultuous period of uncertainty after their label, Dot Records, shut down.
When the pair performed onstage during their new record label’s media luncheon at the 2018 Country Radio Seminar, they recalled how the performance tied into one of their earliest memories of living in Nashville.
“This is a really cool full-circle moment for Maddie and I, because 5 years ago, when we first moved to Nashville, we actually came to this [annual] show,” Dye explained. “We had no idea what we’re doing — we still have no idea what we’re doing!” She laughed. “But, you know what, we get to make music with our new label family, who we absolutely love, so God is really cool.”
To kick off the new chapter of their career, the duo performed a brand-new song called “One Heart to Another,” a moody, measured ballad that describes a conversation between two women: the narrator, and her former boyfriend’s new love interest. “Well, I don’t wanna impose or cause a scene / But I’m gonna tell you what the last one told me / One heart to another / From one ex to the next lover,” the chorus begins. “It gets good, but it don’t get better / He’ll make you feel like it’s forever / From one ex to the next lover, / He goes from one heart to another.”
The song is a warning, from one woman to another, that a new boyfriend’s promises may seem too good to be true because, in fact, they are. The song unfolds over a steady guitar pattern that underscores Dye and Marlow’s depth as songwriters and performers. While staying true to the duo’s lyrical strength and the female-centric spirit of singles like “Girl In A Country Song” and “Shut Up and Fish,” “One Heart to Another” brings a greater sense of maturity and subtlety to the table.
