Luke Bryan Opens Up to Robin Roberts About the Death of His Siblings

When Luke Bryan invited Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts to visit his home for the ABC special Living Every Day: Luke Bryan, he and his wife Caroline showed fans that his happy-go-lucky, joking personality is the real deal. However, the couple also revealed some sides of Bryan and his family that aren’t as apparent to the public.

The Bryans have celebrated nearly 11 years of marriage (their anniversary is next month) and have weathered a considerable amount of life changes during their years together. Luke, who at the age of 19 lost his older brother, then his older sister a decade later, found himself at the receiving end of tragedy once again in 2014. His sister’s husband died unexpectedly, leaving the star’s nieces and nephews without parents.

The Bryans decided to take in the youngest child, Tilden (who is now 15), and raise him alongside their own two sons. The couple were in complete agreement on this matter: “We never thought twice about it,” Caroline says. “It was never something that he and I had to sit down and talk about … We just did it.”

Bryan admits to Roberts that he’s had times where it hasn’t been easy to keep his trademark positive attitude in the face of so much personal turmoil.

“I’ve watched my family go through ebbs and flows where we get mad at God and we get mad at why this has happened,” he relates. “Well, you keep going and you try to be as positive as you can, and you try to appreciate every day. You’ll never get back to 100 percent. You’ll always be working to get back to 75 percent.”

Caroline also unfortunately has experienced family tragedy recently, having lost a niece in early 2017 when the little girl was just seven months old.

Bryan acknowledges that music has helped the family cope with their difficulties, telling Roberts that despite everything he’s been through, he knows he is blessed — and that his faith, the support of his wife, and the memories of those he lost help him pull through. “It certainly makes it special when we’re all together and we know that people are smiling down, and they’re with us celebrating these amazing moments,” he says.

Bryan’s full interview with Roberts airs Monday (Nov. 6) at 10PM ET on ABC.
