Although Taylor Swift is not a country singer any longer, she still won an award at the 2017 CMA Awards, nabbing another trophy for her massive collection. But this time, it was a song she penned but didn’t record. “Better Man,” recorded by Little Big Town, has been named Song of the Year at the 2017 CMA Awards, held at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday (Nov. 8).
Though Swift was not able to be present at the show, LBT took the stage and were presented the trophy by supermodel Karlie Kloss and radio personality Bobby Bones as well as New Artist of the Year nominees Luke Combs and Brett Young.
The group was all smiles, and right away, they wanted to give writer Swift credit. “We didn’t write this song,” said Karen Fairchild. She added, “We’re really glad Phillip checked his email that night,” explaining that he doesn’t always check it–and Swift sent the song via email.
Fairchild went on to say that Swift couldn’t be at the awards this evening, and the group gave her a shout out saying, “Taylor, wherever you are, thank you for this beautiful song and for loving songs and loving Nashville.” They also thanked their fans and song producer Jay Joyce.
Little Big Town’s record The Breaker dropped in February, the follow-up project to 2016’s Wanderlust. The group announced their Ryman residency on Nov. 1 last year, and at that time, they also revealed their first single from The Breaker, which was the now-award-winning “Better Man” — and which they performed at the 2016 CMA Awards. Next year, they’ll hit the road with Kacey Musgraves and Midland for their 2018 Breakers Tour.
The other 2017 Song of the Year nominees at the CMA Awards were “Dirt on My Boots” (Jon Pardi), “Body Like a Back Road” (Sam Hunt), “Blue Ain’t Your Color” (Keith Urban) and “Tin Man” (Miranda Lambert).
