Kenny Chesney hit the stage of Late Night With Seth Meyers on Monday night (Dec. 19) to perform his latest single, “Jesus and Elvis,” and talk about the charity work he’s been doing in St. John after the devastating hurricanes that struck there in September.
Chesney delivered a low-key, introspective rendition of the song, which is the fifth single from his Grammy-nominated current album, Cosmic Hallelujah. Clad in a simple black shirt and gray pants along with his trademark cowboy hat, he performed seated on a stool, backed by a simple arrangement with another acoustic guitarist and a keyboardist for the stripped-down, emotionally effective performance. The country superstar also talked to Meyers about the album, which marks his first Grammy nomination for a work that is not a collaboration, as well as the extensive charity work he’s been doing in St. John since Hurricane Irma, which also hit Chesney’s house in the islands. Chesney started a foundation called Love for Love City after the storms passed, and he’s been on the ground constantly since then, using his own private plane to shuttle supplies in and take refugees out of harm’s way.
Do You Know Everything About Kenny Chesney?
He said that area of the world “has been a place that’s really fed me as an individual over the years. It’s fed me as a human, it’s been a huge part of my adult life, and it’s been a big source of creativeness.”
Chesney wasn’t there during the storm, but he was watching the coverage on television as the hurricane devastated the area, and knowing there were 17 people riding the storm out in his house “was the most anxiety I’d ever felt in my life,” he reflects. “It really was. And I knew then that I was going to do something to help the island, to help the people. We started Love for Love City, and it’s been an unbelievable thing to be a part of.”
