Kelly Clarkson will join Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Alicia Keys on the 14th season of NBC’s The Voice, but what kind of coach will she be?
Reality singing shows have a history of portraying “nice” coaches and “mean” coaches, but Clarkson believes her personality lands somewhere in the middle.
According to Us Weekly, Clarkson, during her album release party at iHeartRadio Theater on Oct. 27, said she feels like “I’m a mix of Simon [Cowell] and Blake [Shelton]. I’m constructive because it would be impossible for me not to be, if you know my mother. I grew up with constructive criticism. And it made me a better human … I’m just saying I think that I’m incapable of not giving criticism constructively. So I think that’s like Simon.”
All of the Times Kelly Clarkson Dabbled in Country Music
Shelton is a favorite on The Voice, which is much more sympathetic to contestants than the early years of American Idol and The X Factor. Those shows made Cowell the most famous mean judge in reality show history. Cowell has gone as far as to tell contestants, “You sounded like three cats being dragged up the motorway” and, “I think you are probably the worst group I have ever heard in my life.”
However, don’t expect Clarkson to be quite that honest (we’d be really surprised). Us quotes Clarkson talking about Shelton and how she hopes to support her chosen contestants during and after the show.
“I love how Blake always really invests in his artists. Like he really goes the extra mile after the show, even if they don’t win. He really supports them and gets them other record deals and gets things moving. That really says a lot about his character. I hope I’m like that.”
Clarkson previously appeared on The Voice in 2015 in a performance with Meghan Linsey and Koryn Hawthorne. She also performed a song from the musical Hamilton titled “It’s Quiet Uptown,” in a duet with Billy Gilman in December of 2016.
