Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban were among the stars wearing all black on the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday night (Jan. 8), with the actress spotlighting the cause during her moving acceptance speech.
It’s not unusual for the married couple to wear black on a red carpet, but by doing so on this night they fell in line with the Time’s Up initiative — a voice for women who’ve suffered sexual harassment and assault. Throughout the E! red carpet broadcast participants took time to talk about the money Time’s Up has raised, some even walking with activists.
The network leaned into the movement, even though a few stars took shots at E! for alleged pay inequality between the sexes.
#MeToo and conversations related to gender inequality, sexual harassment and assault dominated the 2018 Golden Globes, with stars receiving ample time to speak on the topic. Oprah Winfrey talked on air for nine minutes, offering inspiring words and stories that not only went viral Sunday and Monday, but will stand the test of time.
Kidman won a Golden Globe for her role in Big Little Lies. “This character that I play represents something that is at the center of our conversation right now. Abuse,” she said during a nearly three-minute-long, empowering acceptance speech. “I do believe and I hope we can make the change through the stories we tell and the way we tell them. Let’s keep the conversation alive.”
At the end of her speech she thanked Urban, describing their love in terms that made hearts melt. The singer has also been an active part of the conversation; his current single “Female” has become a country anthem for the #MeToo movement.
