Did you have an emotional reaction listening to Keith Urban‘s new song “Female” for the first time? He felt the same the first time he heard it.
Urban was compelled to record the track in the wake of the numerous allegations of sexual abuse against film and media mogul Harvey Weinstein, with his own wife Nicole Kidman speaking out about the issue, along with the several other conversations of sexual harassment taking place in the world today. Urban heard “Female” the day after it was penned by three of Nashville’s most prominent songwriters — Shane McAnally, Nicolle Galyon and Ross Copperman — and immediately knew he needed to record it.
“I got to hear it fresh out of the oven, and it was instant love for me. I know all three of [the writers] and I think obviously the tone of times right now was weighing on all of them, and compelled them to write this song,” Urban tells Rolling Stone Country. “It affected me not just as a husband but also as a father of two young girls, and a son. I had a heart reaction – my first thought was that it was a gospel soul prayer mantra, all rolled into one.”

“Female” serves as the first taste of Urban’s upcoming album that he says he’s been working on for the past year, but he sees it more as a powerful statement than a traditional lead single.” I don’t even think of this song as a first single. It’s a single standalone piece that felt really strong to me,” he says.
The country superstar will perform the song for the first time live during the 2017 CMA Awards on Nov. 8, where he’s also up for Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, with “Blue Ain’t Your Color” scoring three nominations in the category of Single, Song and Music Video of the Year. The awards show broadcasts live from Nashville at 8PM ET on ABC.
