Kacey Musgraves Will Blend ‘Love’ and ‘Pretty Colors’ on 2018 Album, ‘Golden Hour’

2018 should be a ‘golden’ year for Kacey Musgraves. The country star has announced that her new album, Golden Hour, is set to drop in the first half of the year.

Musgraves opens up about the new project in an interview with Entertainment Weeklydescribing the project as “trippy.” She drew inspiration from a number of places, including ’70s disco group the Bee Gees and Neil Young.

“I was thinking about how there are different masks that we wear that represent different sides of us. None of the masks are solely us, but they’re all us,” Musgraves explains of her approach. The “Follow Your Arrow” singer details a variety of personalities that she poured into the album, capturing themes of love, loneliness, sadness, winning, losing and more across the songs.

“On this record, there’s the lonely girl, the blissful girl, the new wife, the girl that’s missing her mom, the angry girl, the sarcastic girl, the ‘60s-sequined Cruella de Vil with the beehive, the shy girl, the life of the party, the winner, the loser — they’re all characters on this record,” she says of Golden Hour, which was recorded in Sheryl Crow’s home studio. “None of them alone are me, but the golden hour is when they all come together and you see me as a whole.”

Part of Musgraves’ personal “golden hour” was her marriage to fellow singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly in October of 2017. She says Golden Hour features more authentic love songs than previous releases, as Kelly’s influence has brought out a side of her she’s never shown before. She also had an epiphany during the solar eclipse in 2017, viewing it as a sign to release the project that reflects a sense of peace in her life that she hopes will offer listeners a dose of positivity.

“It felt like this majestic time where God was saying, ‘This is a moment to be present for, to witness and relish in the beauty of this incredible world,’” she says. “That was important for me to include on this record. It’s such an ugly time right now with society and politics, and it could be easy to focus on that. But one thing we could use is a little more love and positivity and pretty colors.”

Golden Hour is due out early 2018.
