Dan + Shay debuted their brand-new single, “Tequila,” on Wednesday morning (Jan. 10). Readers can press play above to hear the new tune.
Written by Dan + Shay’s Dan Smyers, along with Jordan Reynolds and Nicolle Galyon, “Tequila” is a reflective, midtempo song that likely isn’t what fans will expect based on its title. In the new tune, Dan + Shay sing about how the song’s titular liquor reminds them of a lost love.
“When I taste tequila / Baby, I still see ya,” Smyers and duo partner Shay Mooney sing in the chorus of “Tequila.” “Sorority T-shirt / The same one you wore when we were / Sky high in Colorado / Lips pressed against the bottle / Swearin’ on the Bible / Baby, I’d never leave ya / I remember how bad I need ya / When I taste tequila …”
“Tequila” comes from an as-yet-unreleased album from Dan + Shay; the duo, a press release reports, is in the studio working on the project, which will be out later in 2018. The record will be their third with Warner Bros. Nashville.
Dan + Shay last released new music, their sophomore album, Obsessed, in 2016. That record spawned two No. 1 singles, “From the Ground Up” and “How Not To.” In 2017, both Smyers and Mooney got married: Smyers married his fiancee, Abby Law, in May, while Mooney married his fiancee, Hannah Billingsley, in October. Mooney and Billingsley have a son together, named Asher James, who was born in January of 2017.
