Beloved Nashville studio guitarist Guthrie Trapp is premiering his cover of George Jones‘ “You’re Still on My Mind” exclusively with The Boot. Fans can press play below to hear the song, which features vocals from country icon Vince Gill.
Trapp’s traditionally inspired, energetic guitar playing pairs perfectly with Gill’s unmistakable tenor in this cover of the Jones classic, which is decidedly more upbeat than the original “You’re Still on My Mind.” It’s a special song for Gill, who enjoyed a lengthy friendship with Jones before his death in 2013. Gill was a performer at Jones’ funeral at the Grand Ole Opry, and he later recorded “I Feel a Sad One Comin’ On” in tribute to his late friend.
“You’re Still on My Mind” is one of six classic songs that Trapp and some friends cover on his forthcoming album, Life After Dark. Charlie Worsham lends his voice to a cover of Don Gibson’s “Oh Lonesome Me,” and the McCrary Sisters, Sam Bush and Jimmy Hall also make appearances on the record.
Life After Dark is set for release on March 9. In the meantime, fans can catch Trapp out on the road alongside John Oates through March 16. Then, Trapp will head back to Nashville to return to his musical variety show, Trapped Above Ground, at Acme Feed and Seed.
