With the FLEETWOOD MAC MUSICARES tribute on FRIDAY night at RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL and CLIVE DAVIS’ bash honoring JAY Z last night, the 60th annual GRAMMY AWARDS take place tonight in NEW YORK CITY’s MADISON SQUARE GARDEN after 15 years,in 2003.
This afternoon, the GRAMMY PREMIERE CEREMONY, which will hand out 75 of the 84 categories, is taking place at the THEATRE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, with PAUL SHAFFER hosting and leading the WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS BAND, who opened with a rousing instrumental take on the ROLLING STONES’ “Bitch,” the first time they’ve played together since “Late Night With DAVID LETTERMAN” went off the air. Among those set to perform on the pre-show are nominees BODY COUNT (ICE-T’s heavy metal band has come a long way since being kicked off of WARNER MUSIC GROUP), INDIA.ARIE (a lovely acoustic performance of “I Am Light” in which she declared, “I am not my age/I am not my race”), JAZZMEIA HORN, TAJ MAHAL & KEB’ MO’ and STILE ANTICO.
Presenters include nominees ZAC BROWN, NATALIE GRANT and BERNIE HERMS, LEDISI, LISA LOEB and NEIL deGRASSE TYSON, as well as former RECORDING ACADEMY chair JIMMY JAM.
RECORDING ACADEMY Chair of the Board of Trustees JOHN POPPO made some introductory remarks, including announcing the acquisition of a building to serve as the NEW YORK headquarters for the organization before introducing SHAFFER as host, resplendent in a shiney gold lame suit and sparkly silver shirt.
KENDRICK LAMAR earned his first GRAMMY of a total of seven total nominations for BEST MUSIC VIDEO. The JIMMY IOVINE/DR. DRE HBO documentary, “The Defiant Ones,” took home BEST MUSIC FILM honors, while BRUNO MARS’ “24K Magic” won BEST ENGINEERED ALBUM,NON-CLASSICAL. In a slight upset, CARRIE FISHER defeated BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and NEIL deGRASSE TYSON in the SPOKEN WORD category for her audiobook, “The Princess Diarist.”
