Brett Eldredge tried to take a day off on Christmas. He just wanted to enjoy family, the church service and a restful holiday. His family wouldn’t let him.
“They got so mad at me,” Eldredge says, mostly exaggerating when talking about a conversation he tried to have about breaking a yearly tradition. Everyone would crowd into his family church and at some point, the singer would sneak into the choir loft to sing “O Holy Night.” It’s something he’d been doing since he was a child.
“I would look down from the choir loft and see my whole family and they’re all looking up there, smiling and crying and just loving that moment every year,” Eldredge recalls.
“Now, some Christmas mornings I’ll sit by the tree and sing with my guitar.”
The Best Christmas Music of 2017
So, they reached a compromise. The truth is, Eldredge isn’t mad about it. Getting him to sing Christmas music is a little like getting Cookie Monster to sample a plate of chocolate chip. His partnership with Cracker Barrel for their Rocking and Stockings series of videos is a perfect fit. Find him singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “The First Noel,” in a playlist that features performances from Kelly Clarkson and Jessie James Decker. Both of these Christmas songs appear on his Glow album, released in 2016.
“Christmas is far and away my favorite holiday and recording the music for Glow was a dream come true,” he says. “I’ve been inspired for this record from a very young age, and I dreamt of the day I could record all these classic songs that I’ve loved since I was a little kid. I think we found a little magic on this album and Christmas is all about magic!”
Eldredge’s official touring schedule is empty for the remainder of 2017 (2018 includes a headlining tour and stop at Country Jam in Grand Junction, Colo.) so he’s free to enjoy the season. He says he’s been listening to classics from Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby for months and his house is very decorated.
“I told my mom what kind of vibe I like and she totally delivered,” the 31-year-old says. “It’s kind of a class, Rat Pack Christmas vibe. She knocked it out.”
Look for him on the road with Blake Shelton in 2018. The Long Way headlining tour begins in April.
