Dierks Bentley‘s “Woman, Amen” is a rolling love song that recalls the 42-year-old’s catalog of hits.
“I Hold On” is the easiest comparison, but “Woman, Amen” builds like “Home” did and celebrates like “Freedom,” a track from his Black album. Bentley doesn’t break new ground with this lead single from The Mountain, a new album slated for later this year. He pushes against the edges of paths already cleared.
Speaking to Billboard, Bentley says “Woman, Amen” was inspired by his wife, Cassidy. He’d be lost without her, but she wasn’t as moved by the gesture as you’d expect. It’s not her favorite on the album.
“She’s been around me too long,” he tells the publication. “I’ve come back from so many writing appointments over the past 12 years like, ‘I wrote this song about you’ and she’s like, ‘Just because it’s a love song doesn’t mean it’s about me.’ She can see through things.”
It’s difficult to debate his sincere performance, however. Ross Copperman and Josh Kear helped Bentley write “Woman, Amen,” and he admits it was not part of his mountain sessions. There is an open-air quality to the rhythmic, Mumford & Sons-like country beater, but it’s more mainstream than his fans might have expected given the imagery, his comments and the album title.
Dierks’ New Beard Is Hot, But Are These Hotter?
Dierks Bentley’s “Woman, Amen” Lyrics:
I’d lose my way, yeah, I’d lose my mind / If I faced one day on my own / I know I was saved, the night that she gave / This drifter’s heart a home.
Chorus:
Every night I should be on my knees / Lord knows how lucky I am / I’ll never say it near enough / Thank God, for this woman, amen.
This world has a way of shaking your faith / I’ve been broken again and again / But I need all the cracks in my shattered heart / ‘Cause that’s where her love gets in.
She gives me faith, she gives me grace / She gives me hope, she gives me strength / She gives me love, love without end / Thank God, for this woman, amen.
Thanks for the moon and the stars up above / Forgiveness of sin and your undying love / Every twist, every turn for the way you made sure / All my roads led to her.
So, tonight I will fall down on my knees / ‘Cause Lord knows how lucky I am / I’m gonna shout at the top of my lungs / Thank God, for this woman, amen / Yeah, thank God, for this woman, amen.
