Cody Alan has revealed that he is engaged to be married. The CMT host proposed to his boyfriend, Trea Smith, in September during a vacation in Jamaica.
“I’d been carrying around the ring for a few months and almost popped the question on several different occasions, but I waited,” Alan tells People, adding that he knew the time was right during a candlelight dinner on the beach.
“I was anxious about the moment, so I started my big speech before the food even arrived,” Alan shares. “I told him how much I loved him, and with a few tears and a crack in my voice, I gave him the ring and asked him to marry me. Lucky for me, he said yes!”
Country Stars Who’ve Come Out as Gay
The 44-year-old host of CMT’s Hot 20 Countdown, CMT After MidNite and CMT Radio Live met 25-year-old Smith in 2015 at a Carrie Underwood concert he was hosting.
“Carrie, she’s like cupid to us — but with much better legs!” he jokes to People.
Alan came out as gay on Jan. 12, 2017, and since then he and Smith have hit the red carpet together at several industry events. The South Carolina native admits he struggled with being gay for years out of shame. He married when he was 24 and had two kids, but 10 years ago he realized it wasn’t fair to his wife to let their marriage continue. He says his former wife and his two children are his “biggest supporters” now, and he tells People he knew Smith was his ideal partner when he saw how much Smith loved his children.
“Being a father already, my children were the most important factor in my deciding to get married again,” Alan says, adding that Smith has “helped open my eyes to what it means to have true joy in life, and that he is open to share that love and joy with my children meant the world to me.”
