Chris Stapleton proves why he’s one of country music’s most compelling performers with his performance of “Drunkard’s Prayer” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
Never one for a flashy display, Stapleton set a somber tone with his harrowing voice a series of spotlights shining on him on an otherwise dark set. With just his guitar, Stapleton strummed the chords as he softly, yet powerfully delivered the song’s stirring lyrics about a man expressing sorrow over his relationship with God.
“I wish that I could go to church but I’m too ashamed of me / I hate the fact it takes a bottle to get me on my knees / And I hope he’ll forgive the things you ain’t forgot / When I get drunk, and talk to God,” he sings in the video above, his deep, affecting voice bringing the room to a standstill.
2018 will be a huge year for Stapleton. This performance follows his major wins at the Grammy Awards, where he picked up awards in three country categories. His critically-acclaimed From A Room: Volume 1, won for Best Country Album, while “Either Way” was named Best Country Solo Performance and “Broken Halos” won Best Country Song. He also delivered one of the night’s best performances with Emmylou Harris in tribute to Tom Petty with “Wildflowers.” He’s extended his 2018 All-American Road Show Tour into late fall, adding a series of dates that begin on June 16 in Mississippi and continue through early November. Marty Stuart and Brent Cobb will join him on the tour.
Additionally, Stapleton is featured on Justin Timberlake‘s new album, Man of the Woods, in the form of bouncy, yet smooth “Say Something.”
