Carrie Underwood‘s new song “The Champion” has become an inspiring anthem for all walks of life.
The song was released for Super Bowl LII, but has also been picked up for use during the 2018 Winter Olympics. While numerous professional sports teams have been blasting Underwood’s song in competitions, so have regular — no, extraordinary — people around the United States. From kids reciting the song lyrics each morning in the school’s gymnasium to a young boy finding hope in the message as he goes through cancer treatments and a dance group choreographing moves to the song, it’s helping many.
Underwood has been sharing the videos sent to her through social media.
One mother showed an image of her son at the hospital, undergoing treatment for cancer, thanking the singer for the powerful track. “When you find the perfect song to help your son thru his cancer battle. The champion! Thank you!” she writes.
“The Champion” features rapper Ludacris and was written by Underwood at the request of Sunday Night Football executive producer Fred Gaudelli. They needed a hit for the Super Bowl, and Underwood tested the song out on her husband, NHL Predators player Mike Fisher, who would listen to the track before he took the ice.
“My husband loved it. He would listen to it before playoff games. He was like, ‘I want everyone to hear it!’ and I had to tell him, ‘You can’t do that. You can’t play it in the locker room. I’m sorry.’ But that was a good indicator that we were on the right track,” she tells Variety.
Underwood adds that when she was writing “The Champion,” her main focus was “to celebrate athletes at the top of their game,” but that they also wanted the song “to resonate with people in their everyday lives.”
“We hope the lyrics will inspire people to push themselves beyond their limits to conquer anything they are trying to accomplish or overcome,” she says. “There’s a champion in every single one of us!”
