When we are talking champions, we would be remiss to leave Carrie Underwood off that list. Today, the country music superstar returns after a brief hiatus, releasing an anthem that will play during Super Bowl LII’s show opener, as well as the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Co-written by Underwood, Brett James, Chris Distefano, and rapper Ludacris, “The Champion” is a powerful and motivational song that will invigorate any listener. Underwood is like we have never heard her before in this hard-hitting tune about keeping your head up, staying motivated, and racing to the finish line. The bridge features rap and movie star Ludacris who spells out the word C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N and walks us through the true meaning of the word.
The anthem was originally penned for NBC’s broadcast of this year’s Super Bowl, but was quickly adopted by the Winter Olympics, as it encompasses the heart that is displayed by all the athletes who will compete in South Korea. Underwood explained the goal of the songwriters during their session in which they wrote “The Champion”:
When we were writing “The Champion,” our main focus was to celebrate athletes at the top of their game, but we also wanted the song to resonate with people in their everyday lives. We hope the lyrics will inspire people to push themselves beyond their limits to conquer anything they are trying to accomplish or overcome. There’s a champion in every single one of us!”
