Brad Paisley, Kane Brown Duet on ‘Heaven South’ at 2017 CMA Awards

Brad Paisley teamed with up-and-coming star Kane Brown in one of the most anticipated duet performances of the 2017 CMA Awards on Wednesday night (Nov. 8).

The two performed “Heaven South,” the opening track of Paisley’s latest album. Love and War. Paisley belted the chorus lyrics – “Down on Main Street and everybody’s there / Subwoofers booming like cannons in a square / Turn on the news you’d think the world ain’t got a prayer / If you turn it off and look around / It’s just another day in Heaven South” – which stayed in line with the overall theme of hope and positivity throughout the show.

Paisley, who co-hosted the CMA Awards with Carrie Underwood for the tenth time Wednesday, donned his signature cowboy hat for the performance, along with a shirt that read “Unity.” Paisley kicked off the song, singing a verse before inviting Brown to the stage midway. The two traded lyrics back-and-forth throughout the rest of the song.

Paisley’s old-school matched Brown’s new-school, as the deep-voiced 24-year-old strutted out in a black leather jacket, low-fiving fans in the front row and waving his hands side to side to ignite crowd participation. The two shared a fist bump when the song ended.

The theme of unity and bringing people together pervaded the CMAs broadcast in 2017 in the wake of a series of events that left country music and America reeling, including the mass shooting in Las Vegas, hurricanes, floods, the #MeToo movement and the death of Montgomery Gentry singer Troy Gentry.
