Amanda Shires didn’t have to say a thing at the 2017 CMA Awards to get her point across. The singer-songwriter and fiddler, who is married to 2017 CMA Awards Album of the Year nominee Jason Isbell, showed up to the awards show in a tank top with a message.
Isbell was not at the 2017 CMA Awards — he’s currently touring overseas — so Shires went to the annual ceremony to represent her husband and his band, the 400 Unit (of which she is a member). She and friend Kelly Amber Garcia, a photographer and graphic designer, both sported black skirts and pink tank tops with the words “Mama wants to change that Nashville sound” on them.
The words on Shires and Garcia’s shirts are a lyric in Isbell’s song “White Man’s World,” which appears on The Nashville Sound, the album for which he was nominated at the 2017 CMA Awards. The shirts are part of Shires’ merch offerings.
Isbell and the 400 Unit are touring Europe until mid-November. Shires is not playing with them on their overseas run, Isbell explains, “because we’re trying to balance doing good work with being good parents.” Together, the couple has one daughter, 2-year-old Mercy.
“For me to come back for the awards show, I’d have to cancel three shows in Europe on people who’d already paid for a ticket, so I won’t be able to go,” Isbell said prior to the 2017 CMA Awards, explaining why he wouldn’t be there. “But if I didn’t have a show that night, I’d go just for the spectacle of it.”
Isbell lost the 2017 CMA Awards Album of the Year category to Chris Stapleton.
“I was asleep in Germany so I missed it all,” Isbell admits in a tweet, “but my wife @amandashires met Garth so I call it a huge success.”
Isbell and the 400 Unit released The Nashville Sound, back in June. They recently completed a multi-night residency at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium and have a tour planned for the start of 2018.
