What’s Carly Pearce listening to? The playlist she made for The Boot’s listeners contains a solid mix of ’90s country and today’s hitmakers, and it’s largely made up of kick-butt country women.
Of the 25 songs Pearce selected for her Spotify playlist, 21 of them are sung by women. Sam Hunt, Brooks & Dunn, Vince Gill and Keith Urban are the playlist’s four male acts.
“Ronnie Dunn’s voice has always been one of my favorites, and [Brooks & Dunn] were a staple for me growing up,” Pearce tells The Boot. For her playlist, she selected Dunn and duo partner Kix Brooks’ “Neon Moon;” it’s a song, Pearce says, “always sounded happy, but when I got older and read the lyrics, it’s truly one of the saddest country songs of the ’90s.”
Pearce combats a bit of that sadness with another of her playlist picks: Shania Twain‘s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” It’s a song Pearce covers in her live shows; every time she says, “Let’s go, girls!” it incites a party.
“Shania was such a force when she burst onto the country scene,” Pearce reflects. “She wasn’t afraid of pushing the envelope and creating music and a brand that was always ahead of the curve, yet still so relatable.”
Pearce is a 2018 ACM Awards New Female Vocalist of the Year nominee now, but she got her start singing at Dollywood. Pearce says the experience was “great training,” so it only makes sense that the playlist below would feature one of Dolly Parton‘s most famous songs, “Jolene.”
“Growing up singing at Dollywood, I gained a strong respect for Dolly at a young age,” Pearce notes. “She is such a songwriter, and this song pains me. She’s so vulnerable and raw in this lyric, and I think it set the bar for females to come of how to write from your gut.”
