Tanya Tucker Was in Her Dad’s Car When She First Heard Herself on the Radio

According to folklore, Tanya Tucker gave up the chance to record “Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A.” — a song that became a pop-country smash for Donna Fargo in 1972. No problem: Tucker went on to hit it big with her first Top 10 hit “Delta Dawn” that same year, at the tender age of 13, and her career exploded.

Tucker’s No. 1 hits include “I Won’t Take Less Than Your Love,” “If It Don’t Come Easy” and “Strong Enough to Bend.” But where was the then-13-year-old Tucker when she first heard “Delta Dawn” on the radio? Below, she recalls the moment to The Boot.

I was in Henderson, Nev., at 207 Navaho Dr. I was sitting inside my dad’s ’67 Chrysler station wagon listening to WBAP [out of Fort Worth, Texas] — Bill Mack After Midnight, and that was the very first time I heard it on the radio.

Me, my mother and my dad were sitting there in the car when it came on. It was really something I’ll never forget as long as I live!
