Sugarland’s Back! New Music Coming Soon

Sugarland weren’t just being cheeky when they said “who knows?” with regard to their future on Wednesday night. The duo of Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush are set to return with new music, and soon.

Before presenting the Vocal Duo of the Year award to Brothers Osborne at the 2017 CMA Awards, Nettles and Bush recalled winning the award in years past, rattling off year after year before adding, “and well, who knows?” The insinuation was that Sugarland could finally be making a long-awaited return to the stage and to country radio. A check on socials found their Instagram page wiped clean, aside from a lone post captioned only with #StilltheSame.

It’s not clear what that means (although it’s likely the title of their comeback song), but after the CMA Awards the duo played the Big Machine Label Group afterparty and then went on to announce that new music will be coming in the next few weeks. That’s all for now, but hey, after a four year hiatus, we’ll take a few crumbs to tide us over.

Sugarland went on hiatus in 2013 — two years after a tragedy at the Indiana State Fair. Bush has insisted he’d like to return to the road with his longtime partner, but Nettles has been less committed. In the interim they’ve released several solo albums and singles to radio, among them Bush’s “Trailer Hitch” — the highest charting of the bunch.

That the news came through Big Machine Label Group is new, as the duo’s status with the label was unclear after Nettles exited Universal Label Group in 2015. She signed to Big Machine Label Group and released her Playing With Fire album. Bush is a solo artist on Broken Bow Records Nashville imprint Wheelhouse Records.
