Route 91 Headliner Sam Hunt Shares Simple, But Profound Message

Lord be near (Route 91) Psalm 91

Sam Hunt headlined Route 91 Harvest Festival on Saturday night (Sept. 30), 24 hours before a man open fired on a crowd of 22,000 fans, killing 58 people and injuring 530.

A day later he made a profound post on Instagram, captioning a dark photo of himself with his head down: “Lord be near (Route 91) Psalm 91.”

The first two lines of Psalm 91 read:

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.

These Are the Vegas Victims’ Stories

Sunday night headliner Jason Aldean was mid-song when shots rang out, but the impact reached all of the festival performers, including Friday night headliner Eric Church. He made his first stop since Route 91 at the Grand Ole Opry on Wednesday night (Oct. 4), where he delivered a tearful speech to a Nashville audience. As Church explains, he saw one of the survivors of the festival, Heather Melton, wearing a Church Choir shirt during an interview on CNN after the incident. She told Anderson Cooper that she and her husband, Sonny Melton, who died during the shooting, attended the Route 91 Festival specifically to see Church.

That hit the star deep.

“The reason I’m here, the reason I’m here tonight is because of Heather Melton, her husband Sonny who died, and every person that was there,” Church said, pointing out empty seats that had been reserved for them. “Let me tell you something; I saw that crowd, and I saw them with their hands in the air, I saw them with boots in the air, and what I saw in that moment in time was frozen. There’s no amount of bullets that could take that away.”
