Reba McEntire is the first country singer to be spotted wearing a white rose at the 2018 Grammys but she’s unlikely to be the last.
The 2018 nominee walked the red carpet in a sleeveless, shimmering black and silver gown and minimal accessories aside from the white rose pinned near her left shoulder. It’s a show of support for the fight against sexual harassment, and a nod to the #TimesUp movement. Last week several artists announced they’d be wearing a white rose at the 2018 Grammys, however it wasn’t immediately clear if country singers like McEntire, Thomas Rhett, Maren Morris or Brothers Osborne (or the many others expected to attend) would participate. The white rose was chose for the Grammys’ demonstration of solidarity because it’s practical, traditional and symbolic. The suffragettes wore white roses during their protests, and Hillary Clinton wore a white rose during Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration. Kelly Clarkson is going to be wearing the rose, as well as pop and hip-hop stars like Halsey, Rita Ora and Rapsody, as well as rocker Tom Morello and legend Cyndi Lauper.
The 2018 Grammy Awards are televised on CBS at 8PM ET on Sunday night. The Grammy pre-show ceremony started several hours earlier, with the majority of the awards set to be presented there. McEntire’s Sing It Now: Songs of Faith & Hope album is nominated in the Best Roots Gospel Album category.
