The year 2017 brought to the forefront of country music some amazing up-and-coming talents. The five contenders for New Artist of the Year at the 2017 CMA Awards are flexing some serious muscle in the country world.

Lauren Alaina is enjoying the success of her first No. 1 hit, the title track from her album Road Less Traveled. She was named the runner-up of Season 10 of American Idol in 2011, and six years later, she’s getting her due. Luke Combs is another rising star who has made big waves this year, with a No. 1 debut single (“Hurricane“) and a headlining tour.

Old Dominion, meanwhile, are coming in hot thanks to a recent No. 1 single and a No. 1 album, their sophomore disc, Happy EndingsJon Pardi, too, has No. 1 hits (“Dirt on My Boots” and “Head Over Boots”) that have helped solidify his place as a new artist with a bright future; his latest single, “Heartache on the Dance Floor,” might not be about boots, but that doesn’t seem to be slowing it down.

Last but not least in this category, Brett Young has become a fixture in country music in 2017: Only one disc deep into his career, he has two chart-topping hits, “Sleep Without You” and “In Case You Didn’t Know.”
