Maren Morris, Zedd Debut Pop-Oriented ‘The Middle’ Target Commercial

Maren Morris and Zedd are making music together, and it’s out there now for everyone to see.

The country star recently teamed with the electronic artist for their new song, “The Middle,” which features Morris on vocals and Zedd in his usual production/DJ role. Though the song was released prior to the 60th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday (Jan. 28), Morris and Zedd created new buzz by debuting a video for the song in a commercial during the Grammy Awards.

If the bullseye imagery on the elevator button in the beginning of the video and the man-made bullseye at the end of the video look familiar, it’s because it’s the logo for retailer Target, who sponsored the commercial as part of its #MoreMusic campaign. Besides Morris and Zedd, Target has previously recruited Lil Yachty, Carly Rae Jepsen, Blake Shelton‘s girlfriend/pop star Gwen Stefani and more.

Morris and Zedd’s “The Middle” leans more pop than country, and sees Morris expanding her pop influence even further. At the 2017 CMA Awards on Nov. 8, Morris teamed with former One Direction member-turned-solo-artist Niall Horan for their duet “Seeing Blind,” signifying more pop-laden tracks could be on the horizon.

In an interview with Billboard, Morris spoke about today’s crossover collaborations in country music, noting that she feels genre is becoming a less important factor in modern music.

“When I look at songs like the Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line collaboration [‘Meant to Be‘] being so successful at country, it leads me to believe that the boundaries are coming down, and people just want quality,” Morris explains to Billboard. “Fans don’t think that way about the genres, it’s just about good music.”
