Tuesday (Jan. 9) is Gayle’s birthday, and on Monday (Jan. 8), Gayle shared on Twitter that her birthday wish for 2018 “is for everyone to send love and prayers to my sister, Loretta Lynn, who fell and broke her hip last week.” Gayle does not give further specifics about Lynn’s injury, but she does note that she spent Sunday (Jan. 7) with Lynn, and that “she is in good spirits and is doing as well as can be expected with this type of injury.”
Lynn has largely stayed out of the public eye in recent months, ever since suffering a stroke on May 4, 2017. Following her stroke, Lynn’s publicist confirmed that she was expected to make a full recovery; however, Lynn decided to postpone the release of a new album, Wouldn’t It Be Great. The project was originally scheduled for release on Aug. 18, 2017, but Lynn is waiting until sometime this year to drop the album “because this record is so special for me … [and] deserves me at my best.”
Lynn stayed off the road to prioritize her health, but she has made clear that she isn’t done with her career yet: In a Facebook post, she writes, “I’m just letting everybody know that Willie ain’t dead yet and neither am I, and I can’t wait to see all of you on the road!” On Oct. 1, 2017, during the Tennessee Motorcycle and Music Revival, the 85-year-old performed her songs “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “You Ain’t Woman Enough (to Take My Man)” with her twin daughters and her granddaughter, Tayla Lynn.
