Keith Urban Gives Poignant Cover of ‘Lean on Me’ After Vegas Shooting [Watch]

In the face of tragedy, music brings people together. Music has the power to heal, and Keith Urban seeks to heal with a performance of “Lean on Me” during an appearance on the Bobby Bones Show.

On Monday, a day after the Oc. 1 shooting that left 58 people dead and hundreds more injured at Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Urban grabbed his guitar. You could feel his pain as he sang the powerful lines: “Lean on me, when you’re not strong / And I’ll be your friend / I’ll help you carry on / For it won’t be long / ‘Til I’m gonna need / Somebody to lean on.”

It was an honest, authentic and emotional delivery of a timeless song.

Urban was also present at a candlelight vigil for Vegas shooting victims, held in Nashville on Monday evening. There he sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water” after telling a gut-wrenching story of how he explained the horrific event to his young daughter on the morning drive to school.

“‘First of all, these were innocent people horrifically taken, and secondly, they’re like family,’” Urban told Sunday, 9. “It’s the one thing about country music that’s always been the center of it — it is community. So I did know those people, in that way.”

As the final headliner of the three-day Route 91 Fest, Jason Aldean was performing his hit song “When She Says Baby” when Stephen Paddock opened fire from his 32nd floor hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, onto the crowd of thousands of fans gathered at the Las Vegas Village for the show. Aldean has since announced he is canceling immediate tour dates (Oct. 6-8) out of respect for the victims, but also to mourn and spend time with his family. He will take the stage again on Oct. 12 in Tulsa, Okla.
