Kane Brown First Heard ‘Heaven’ Through the Floor

Kane Brown didn’t write his latest single, “Heaven,” but he related to it immediately the first time he heard it.

Brown was on a writers retreat, and he was working on another song, “What’s Mine Is Yours,” when he heard “Heaven” come drifting up through the floor from where someone was writing downstairs. He went downstairs to investigate and found Shy Carter, Matthew McGinn and Lindsay Rimes working on the song.

“So my buddy Shy Carter started singing it to me, and his voice is amazing, but also the song just really hit me and made me feel close to it,” Brown told Taste of Country in the runup to the 2017 CMA Awards in November.

“It really made me think about my fiancee,” he adds. “So I was like, ‘There’s got to be other people that can relate to this song.'”

The track is a fusion of R&B and country, with a romantic, sentimental lyric.

“Everybody’s talking about heaven like they just can’t wait to go / Saying how it’s gonna be so good, so beautiful / Lying next to you, in this bed with you, I ain’t convinced / ‘Cause I don’t know how, I don’t know how heaven, heaven / Could be better than this,” Brown sings in the chorus of “Heaven.”

Brown included the song as the final track on the new deluxe edition of his self-titled debut album, and it is his latest single at country radio. The rising star looks imposing with his tattoos, but he tells us it’s not difficult for him to relate to vulnerable love ballads like “Heaven.”

“It’s easy, ’cause it’s just from your heart. You’re not lying about anything,” he says.

Brown’s previous single was “What Ifs,” a duet with Lauren Alaina. That song earned him his first No. 1 hit at country radio.
