Johnny Cash’s ‘Unearthed’ Recordings Headed to Vinyl

Get ready, Johnny Cash fans: The Man in Black’s Unearthed collection is being released as a colossal vinyl box set for the first time ever on Nov. 3.

Produced by Rick Rubin, Unearthed was first released in November of 2003, just two months after Cash died that September. The box set featured stripped-down songs, mostly unreleased, that were recorded in Cash’s later years. According to a press release, “the recordings, which run the stylistic gamut from stark balladry to punchy rockabilly to heartfelt gospel to classic covers, offer a stunning encapsulation of Cash’s wide-ranging musical vision, and provide a fitting epitaph for his iconic career.”

Universal Music

In total, Unearthed features 79 songs across nine records, broken into five distinct themed sections. Those sections include the acoustic solo recordings of Who’s Gonna Cry, amazing guest appearances by the likes of June Carter Cash and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers during Trouble in Mind, acoustic duets in the Redemption Songs section, gospel music on My Mother’s Hymn Book and a 15-song collection of Cash’s most iconic songs, produced by Rubin, in the Best of Cash on American. A full listing of the songs being pressed on this special vinyl collection can be seen below.

In addition to the records themselves, the new Unearthed vinyl box set includes a 60-page coffee table book that allows fans to dive deeper into the collection. The book features notes from Cash and Rubin, and photographs from the recording sessions. The entire set is available for pre-order now.
