Jason Aldean surprised Saturday Night Live viewers to deliver a powerful statement during a cold open on Saturday (Oct. 7). His appearance followed the mass shooting that occurred during his headlining set at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 and left 58 people dead.

“This week we witnessed one of the worst tragedies in American history. Like everyone I’m struggling to understand what happened that night and how to pick up the pieces and start to heal,” Aldean says solemnly in the clip above. “So many people are hurting, they’re our children, parents, brothers, sisters friends — they’re all part of our family.”

“So I want to say to them: We hurt for you and we hurt with you, but you can be sure we’re going to walk through these tough times together, every step of the way,” Aldean continues. “Because when America is at its best, our bond and our spirit is unbreakable.”

Aldean closed out his unannounced appearance by playing Tom Petty’s ” I Won’t Back Down,” offering a sense of hope while also honoring the song’s original hitmaker, who died on Oct. 2.

Despite the week’s events, the country star kept his composure and brought grace to the Saturday Night Live stage. It was Aldean’s first public appearance since the tragedy. He addressed the situation via social media in the days following the attack, calling for unity while expressing grief for the victims. He canceled tour dates through the weekend out of respect for those who died, but will resume touring on Thursday (Oct. 12) in Tulsa, Okla.
