Home Free Say ‘Hillbilly Bone’ Was ‘One of the Most Fun Songs’ to Record

Home Free‘s interpretation of Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins‘ “Hillbilly Bone” got a seal of approval from both stars, but they didn’t even need it — recording the song was fun in itself.

Home Free are known for their ability to spin popular songs in new directions, and they breathed new, a capella breath into the country track, which won Vocal Event of the Year at the 2010 ACM Awards. “That’s a song that I really championed,” bass singer Tim Foust explains about the group’s decision to take on “Hillbilly Bone.” “I didn’t get any push back. Everybody was like, ‘Yeah, this is definitely a Home Free kind of song.'”

When the guys went into the studio with producer Darren Rust, they played around with the track until they created a rendition all their own. “It’s got so much attitude in that song and you wonder ‘is this a song that’s going to translate to a capella, like can we be cool enough?” Foust says, laughing.. “And then it really actually came together really quickly.”

“Turns out that was one of the most fun songs to sing,” adds member Adam Chance.

The music video featured the quintet throwing a barn party in camo tops while showing off their fancy hip shakes, and it drew the attention of the song’s original stars, with Shelton taking to Twitter to share his appreciation for the cover. “It’s one of the biggest rewards,” Chance says about getting Shelton and Adkins’ approval. “It’s such an honor,” adds Adam Rupp.

Home Free’s cover of “Hillbilly Bone” is featured on the group’s latest album, Timeless.
