Hear Jake Owen’s Brand-New Single, ‘I Was Jack (You Were Diane)’

Jake Owen‘s new single, “I Was Jack (You Were Diane),” isn’t shy about referencing the song that inspired it. From an opening riff ripped directly from John Mellencamp (then John Cougar)’s song to nods to the lyrics of “Jack & Diane,” the upbeat track leans into the nostalgia. Readers can press play below to listen.

Written by David Ray, Jody Stevens and Craig Wiseman (Mellencamp also receives a songwriting credit for the inspiration and borrowed melody; Owen says the icon has given the song his blessing), “I Was Jack (You Were Diane)” uses the famous song to look back on a past relationship between “two American kids, just like them.” Owen speak-sings throughout the song’s verses, but all-out sings its chorus.

“Do you turn it up? / Do you sing along? / Every time you hear that song / Like we did then / Like we did when,” goes the chorus of “I Was Jack (You Were Diane).” “Do you close your eyes? / Does it make you laugh? / Do the memories take you back / To six-packs and a Chevy Cheyenne / Way back / When I was Jack / And you were Diane.”

Produced by Joey Moi, “I Was Jack (You Were Diane)” is Owen’s first single on Big Loud Records. After more than a decade with RCA Nashville, the singer signed with Big Loud in November.

Owen will spend his summer on the road, on his Life’s Whatcha Make It Tour. The trek is scheduled to begin in May.
