Drive-By Truckers Reveal ‘The Perilous Night’ on Election Day 2017 [LISTEN]

On Tuesday (Nov. 7), U.S. citizens in various parts of the country will be at the polls voting for their state’s governor (Virginia, New Jersey), their city’s major (New York City) and more. To mark the occasion the Drive-By Truckers have released a brand-new song, “The Perilous Night,” that looks back at some of the events that have occurred since the 2016 presidential election.

Readers can press play above to hear “The Perilous Night.” Drive-By Truckers member Patterson Hood explains in a press release that he began writing the song “on the day the Electoral College met in December 2016” and finished it up “in the wake of the horrific events in Charlottesville, Va., last summer.” The Truckers recorded the song in Athens, Ga., while on a break from their fall tour, and the song was mixed on Oct. 2, the day Tom Petty died.

“Something’s got ahold of our feel alright / Out of control in the appetite / We’re moving into the perilous night, Amen,” Hood sings in “The Perilous Night.” The lyric video for the song includes shots of Donald Trump, KKK marches and riots.

“”The Perilous Night” is a sort of nightmarish epilogue to the themes we addressed on [the Drive-By Truckers’ newest album], American Band,” Hood explains. “It may be the darkest song I’ve ever written, but it’s also a dance song. Turn it up!”

“The Perilous Night” will be released as a 7-inch vinyl via ATO Records on Dec. 15. The B-side will be a live version of the American Band track “What It Means,” recorded at the Newport Folk Festival. The record is available for pre-order now; a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
