Chris Young was backstage at the sold-out Route 91 Festival in Las Vegas just after midnight Monday morning (Oct. 2) when a gunman opened fire. Young says he took cover from bullets in a backstage trailer.

“Spent I don’t know how long on the floor of a trailer behind the stage … know multiple people are dead. Listening to that gunfire …” Young says. “I’m literally shaking still.”

Jason Aldean was onstage, closing out the three-day event at Las Vegas Village near Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino when the incident occurred. He rushed off stage and was unharmed.

Las Vegas police report that the shooter, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, is dead after killing more than 50 concertgoers. Police say the shots came from above, likely a hotel room. Some witnesses believed they were hearing fireworks when the shooting began because the shots were happening so quickly.

“Why,” Young continues. “I’m not gonna say anything else other than I’m lucky to be alive. As are many others … and so many people are gone … this is heartbreaking.”

Sunday night’s (Oct. 1) Route 91 Festival lineup also included Jake Owen, Luke Combs and Kane Brown.
