Brett Young has had one of the breakout successes of the year in country music with his debut album, but the singer is already looking forward to his second project.
“We just had our first song meeting for the second record,” Young tells Taste of Country. “It looks like we’re going to get in the studio in December and again in early January to cut the first half of the record.”
Young doesn’t feel rushed as so many artists do with a sophomore album.
“We’re in a good position with songs right now,” he says. “If we had to pick all 12 right now, we’d feel comfortable with them. But we won’t go in to cut the second half until probably February and March, so I have time to be writing, and we’ll see if we can’t surprise ourselves and maybe beat a few songs that we’re in love with right now.”
Young is aiming to have a second record out “at the very latest, end of next year,” he says. He’s scored three hits already from his self-titled debut album with “Sleep Without You,” “In Case You Didn’t Know” and his current single, “Like I Loved You,” and he tells us, “Quite possibly, depending on where we go after ‘Liked I Loved You,’ there could be a single from a next record as early as next summer.”

Young’s been writing steadily as he’s toured to promote his debut album, and one of his collaborators is Charles Kelley from Lady Antebellum. They wrote together several times while Young was supporting the trio on their You Look Good Tour, and he tells us one of the songs they wrote will probably end up on his next album, while another may very well end up on Lady A’s next studio project.
“Charles is a great writer,” he states. “Charles does it all really well. He definitely fell more into the melody when we were writing with these specific writers, and his melodies are so cool. You look at those Lady Antebellum records, there’s a very identifiable sound, and I think a lot of those melody decisions are Charles, because it came out in our writes. One thing he brought specifically to the song it looks like I’m gonna cut for my record was a really cool melodic twist.”
Young is currently out on the road on his first headlining tour. His Caliville Tour runs through Dec. 16 and features Carly Pearce as his support act. Taste of Country named him one of our RISERS for 2017, and his stunningly emotional cover of “Hallelujah” from the RISERS shoot has racked up more than 1.4 million views on YouTube.
